INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

WARNINGS

  • Acerdent diamond dental burs are sold non-sterile and must be sterilized prior to first use and between subsequent uses in accordance with the following instructions.
  • Care must be taken when handling contaminated burs. Gloves and eye protection should be worn.
  • All packaging must be removed prior to processing.
  • Acerdent diamond dental burs may be damaged by alkaline and acidic detergents. Always use a pH neutral detergent solution for cleaning.
  • Acerdent diamond dental burs should not be exposed to temperatures in excess of 140°C.

Limitations on
reprocessing

  • Repeated reprocessing in line with these instructions has only minimal effect on Acerdent diamond dental burs. End of useful life is normally determined by wear and attrition during use rather than by the effects of reprocessing. Burs should be visually inspected for signs of wear prior to reuse.

INSTRUCTIONS

Point of use:

  • Remove from packaging prior to first sterilization.
  • Remove any excess soil with a disposable wipe.
  • Handle carefully to protect fine burs from damage.
  • Burs should be reprocessed as soon as possible after use.

Preparation for
decontamination

  • Disassembly is not required.
Cleaning: Automated
  • Automated cleaning is the preferred method.
  • Use a validated washer/disinfectors complying with HTM 2030 (UK only) or national equivalents. Use only appropriate cleaning agents compatible with both the burs and the equipment. Follow the instructions issued by both the equipment and cleaning agent suppliers.
  • Validated ultrasonic baths with appropriate cleaning agents may be used.
  • After cycle completion visually inspect for removal of soil. Repeat cycle if necessary.
Cleaning: Manual
  • Automated cleaning is the preferred method.
  • Manual cleaning by careful brushing/wiping using absorbent disposable wipes/brushes and pH neutral cleaning agents followed by thorough rinsing with running potable water and drying may be used in exceptional circumstances.
  • Always inspect visually to confirm removal of soil. Repeat cleaning if necessary.
Disinfection:
  • Sterilization by exposure to moist heat, rather than disinfection, is the recommended method for the reprocessing of the burs.

Drying:

  • Dry by wiping with absorbent disposable wipes or dry heat. Do not expose burs to temperatures in excess of 140°C.
  • Burs left wet may corrode or stain.

Maintenance,
Inspection and
Testing:

  • Visually inspect to ensure contamination has been removed from all burs.
  • Visually inspect for signs of damage and wear. Cutting edges should be free of defects and burs with elongated shapes should be free from distortion.
  • Discard damaged or corroded burs.
  • Some surface discoloration or dulling may routinely occur after moist heat sterilization. This does not affect performance.

Packaging:

  • For wrapped burs an autoclave with a validated pre-vacuum cycle capability should be used.
  • An autoclave cycle including only a post sterilization vacuum for drying purposes is not suitable for sterilizing wrapped burs.
  • Burs may be processed in dedicated instrument trays or in general purpose sterilization trays in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Cutting edges should be protected.
Sterilization:
    • Use only a validated pre-vacuum autoclave for wrapped burs complying with HTM 2010 (UK only) or national equivalents.
    • Do not expose the burs to temperatures in excess of 140°C
    • The following time/temperature combinations are acceptable:

Storage:
  • Take appropriate precautions to avoid recontamination prior to next use.

Note: The instructions provided above have been validated by the manufacturer as being capable of preparing Acerdent diamond burs for first and subsequent re-use. It remains the responsibility of the user/reprocessor to ensure that the reprocessing as actually performed using equipment, materials and personnel in the reprocessing facility achieves the desired result. This normally requires validation and routine monitoring of the process.
